Donna Harkin is a musician from Co. Donegal, Ireland, now living just outside Frankfurt, Germany. She is no stranger to Elmstein – she first attended as a tutor when Pat Kelly set up the summer school in the autumn of 2011 and returned every year until Covid struck. Her first love in life was music and she discovered her fascination with it at the age of 6. She got her first accordion at the age of 10 and joined an accordion marching band. By the age of 12 she taught beginners in the band and by the age of 16 had taken over the teaching of the senior band, introducing new material and composing multiple harmony parts. Her introduction to traditional Irish music came at the age of 14, through a friend and it was love at first tune. In 2023, Donna was honoured for her contribution to traditional Irish music in her home county of Donegal.
She currently works as a private online tutor of Irish music, covering a number of instruments but specialising in ‘anything with buttons and bellows’. She chooses to create individual learning paths based on students individual abilities and creates unique learning goals for and with each student. Donna has taught people ranging from 6 months old right up to people in their 90’s and has worked in all sorts of settings including festival workshops, formal school teaching (at all levels) and online. She has experience with performance, sound technology, recording, composition, arrangement and conducting and when it comes to music, there is very little she hasn’t tried!
The 2/row button accordion (B/C) is her primary instrument but she has an excellent working knowledge of the piano accordion, concertina (Anglo and English), tin whistle, flute, banjo, mandolin, guitar and piano. Her style of playing could be described as staccato and melodious and her style of teaching as fun, inclusive and student-centred. The workshop in May is for students who are strong at the intermediate to advanced level. We can cover anything including basses, ornamentation, how to get the ‘swing’ into the music, how to create melodic variation, finger patterns and much more. If anyone is interested in lessons at a beginner level, Donna would be willing to arrange a half-hour private lesson for one or two people.
